North Mound, at a mere 250 acres, is the smallest of the four mounds.
The chimneys in the middle distance belong to a methane flare, which
collects the methane from the garbage underneath and burns off the excess.
The rest is sent to the recovery plant near the land entrance to Fresh
Kills and funneled to 10,000 Staten Island households as cooking and
heating fuel. Future capacity is estimated at about 25,000 homes.
