Guadalupe Canyon: The Gas Works

 

 
 

At the bottom of the pit stands a clutch of machinery that receives the captured methane produced by the subterranean trash. Every day, some 1.7 million cubic feet of gas is converted to usable energy—the equivalent of 34,500 barrels of oil per year. Five thousand local households cook their dinners and dry their clothes with it.
