Sunnyvale: Western Mound

In winter, the mounds turn a vivid green.

Walking trails go off in every direction. One of them starts by the sewage treatment plant and then quickly winds out of the dump, into the old salt ponds, which are now being rehabilitated.

I visited on December 10, 2005, on the most spectacularly serene day, brightly sunny and mild, virtually windless. Everything sparkled. The birds were impossibly plentiful. There were egrets, herons, coots, the fattest geese I’ve ever seen. All of them in such profusion as to give hope for the future.
