Waking up to Garbage: January 7

January 7 , 2002— 7:20am

Thick fog, endless trucks (17 in 10 minutes). They all bear the same logo that says "People. Service. Environment," but goes with different company names—Sunset Scavengers, Sanitary Fill, Golden Gate, West Coast Recycling.

A little research shows that the company is a cooperative and has a long list of collection, recycling, and disposal companies operating under its banner. In fact, Norcal is the subject of a book-lenght study (Stewart Perry, Collecting Garbage), entirely written in the tone of voice usually reserved for the heroes of the Normandy invasion. At least some of the citizenry of Brisbane holds a rather different view.
